My Floral Fantasy

As we enter Spring, trends are starting to be clearly carved out for us to wish for, envy and follow. There is a huge reference to the Seventies, romance and bright colours. Snakeskin and fringing are also set to be a wonder, especially among the high street. The minimalist trend is still seeping through and hanging in from the past two seasons, and has been given a slight bohemian update, seen notably from the likes of Chloe and BCBG. These trends are all of course tempting, testable and perfect for the long, hot summer days ahead. But there’s always that one Spring/Summer chestnut that comes back every year: Florals.

And this year, florals have got my heart racing. It all began when I saw what the rising legend, Erdem Moralioglu has lined up for the fashion fiend this season. It is a pure dream. The collection itself is a progressive story through colour, and this is best noticed if you view the catwalk presentation. It begins with pure white lace on chiffon dresses, and then is given an injection of coral embroidered details, which leads to the solid coral dresses- one of my favourites being a fitted chiffon dress, covered with red lace, already seen on Michelle Williams. The journey then takes you through to a mixture of white, red and green, like entering a rose garden. There are elegant high-waist skirts in dainty cottons, sheer blouses with floral details, and then pieces completely covered in print, combining yellows, green, coral, white and black. The catwalk was like a running commentary of the most stylish tea party guest list ever, and I am in envy of them all.

What I love about the collection is its ability to present the light breeziness associated with Spring. You can imagine slipping into a little white flared strapless dress, detailed with red and green embroidered flowers, and just skipping out of the door, into the sun, for a day of simply enjoying life and your surroundings. The structure of the dresses is highly significant- Erdem has really adhered to many different shapes. There are sophisticated and sexier fitted dresses, perfect for night time, especially in the full black or coral lace, and there are dreamy, playful, less figure hugging dresses, which accentuate legs to the height of chic cuteness. For work and everyday wear there are little printed shorts and blouses. Other petit details include small ruffles on the shoulders and little capes or fishtail draping on the back of the dresses in the same materials, adding a touch of romance.

The overall sense of adorable delicacy is completed with the shoes. The heels are made in either the matching lace or floral print, and detailed with ribbons which wrap up around a few inches up your leg. They may not be the easiest to walk in, but who needs to rush when you’re enjoying life so much, and looking so cute as well! From re-watching the catwalk of the collection just now, I cannot help but feel an overwhelming urge to run outside right now, except its raining. But seriously, if you haven’t done so already, watch it on youtube. The music, the trees in the background, the way the materials sway freely when the models walk, the way their hair is so beautifully plaited; it will make you want Spring to arrive this minute. Erdem himself claimed his signatures are “colour and optimism”, and I believe to describe Spring, those two words just seem to hit the nail right on the head.
