A stark contrast to the young, new gothic lad that is Gareth Pugh, MAC have revealed their next collaborator is none other than Iris Apfel, the stylish socialite and businesswoman who, since 2005′s ‘Rara Avis: The Irreverent Iris Apfel’ exhibition in New York, has been the centre of attention among the fashion elite.

Iris and her husband ran a textiles business from 1950 to 1992, with Iris also working on design projects for American presidents and lecturing and consulting on style. Her eclectic and bold mix of jewellery and accessories has been an inspiration to bloggers and catwalks alike, and after her jewellery designs for website, yoox, make up appears to be her next venture.

The collection will include lipsticks, eye shadows and nail lacquers in her trademark bold colours, and will be available exclusively online from January 2012. Plus, the prices will range from £9-£14: a complete MAC bargain!

There is a tendency during sale season to partake in a mad rush around the racks, grabbing everything in sight including that yellow pvc tiered miniskirt for the simple reason that it has 70% off, convincing yourself that you have got a great bargain. Well, that’s lesson number one: If you never once wear said miniskirt, then it is not a bargain. It is a total waste of time and money. But fear not, in order for you to avoid such situations, we have come up with a definitive guide to how to successfully shop the January sales:

1. One of the main things to remember in the sales is that shops are going to try and get rid of old stock in January, meaning that you may find unsold summer items on the racks. Unless it’s something that you have had your eye on all year, avoid this rail with a passion.
2. Don’t be seduced by the huge discount on an item. Stop, take a look at it and think when you would wear it and what you would wear it with. If you cannot answer either of these questions then put it back. It will just sit in you wardrobe until you have had it long enough to warrant throwing out in two or three clearouts’ time.
3. Look for investment pieces even if they still seem a little expensive to you. A top reduced from £25 to £5 may seem like a better option at the time, but you are getting so much more if you invest in a great quality mac reduced from £250 to £50. Don’t be afraid to spend if you are spending wisely.
4. Look for reductions in new season stock. You may have to search for it but when you find it, jump on the higher priced items and you will benefit in the long run.
5. When buying reduced last season items, work out whether they have staying power for next season. If the item has been around for a few seasons, then it is less likely to regenerate next winter.
6. Finally, keep a clear head. Don’t be pulled into the mad rush at the counters. Think about what you are looking for before you leave the house and search only for those items and any other great deals that catch your eye. Mindlessly flicking through sales racks with no purpose is when the PVC seems like a fabulous idea. Have fun!
